Māori numbers from 1 to 100 – Ngā Tau
Ngā Tau = The numbers
We have already seen the numbers from 1 to 10 in Māori:
- 1 – tahi
- 2 – rua
- 3 – toru
- 4 – whā
- 5 – rima
- 6 – ono
- 7 – whitu
- 8 – waru
- 9 – iwa
- 10 – tekau
Once you have learnt these basic ten numbers, it is very easy to count up to one hundred.
To say a “tens” number like 20, 30, 40, 50, etc. you use: number + tekau.
- 10 – tekau
- 20 – rua tekau
- 30 – toru tekau
- 40 – whā tekau
- 50 – rima tekau
- 60 – ono tekau
- 70 – whitu tekau
- 80 – waru tekau
- 90 – iwa tekau
NOTE: We don’t say “tahi tekau“… only tekau!
All numbers from 11 to 99 will now follow a basic pattern.
For example to say thirty five, simple say toru tekau, which means 30 and then you add mā rima… Toru tekau mā rima (35).
